Inmate texting apps are a great method to stay in contact with a relative or friend who is currently in jail. These apps are designed to be in compliance with prison rules which allow family and friends to send messages, pictures and video calls, eCards and money to their prison trust account. There are additional federal inmate apps that provide additional services like phone calls and video visits.

The JPay application, for example allows family and friends to easily transfer money into the trust account of an inmate as well as images, emails, eCards and video grams. It also lets them create personalized postcards that include personal photos. It is a safer, more secure alternative to postal mail.

Another popular app for texting prisoners is GettingOut. It provides "simple reliable and safe communication" between inmates with their loved family members. The app is available at selected correctional facilities that allow inmates to upload photos and communicate with family members and friends using their tablets. Inmates pay $0.25 per message, inmate text and their loved ones pay cost of data to access them (but there are no explicit images). The GettingOut application can be used to upload a picture to Facebook or Foursquare, check-in to Foursquare and also add the option of a YouTube video.
